Matthias was chosen to replace Judas as the twelve Apostles. He was also among the 72 disciples sent out to spread the good news, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Matthias, whose name means “gift of God,” had been a follower of Christ since Christ's baptism. According to St. Peter in Acts, Matthias was also a witness to Christ's resurrection and remained with Christ until Christ's ascention.
